Shane Vereen to the New England Patriots: 2011 NFL Draft Scouting Reports

Cal Junior RB Shane Vereen is the latest in a long line of Bears’ backs (Adimchinobe Echemandu, J.J. Arrington, Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett and Jahvid Best)

 to make the jump to the NFL. 

At 5’10" 211 Vereen is built in the prototypical RB mold. He has good speed (4.49 40), quickness and leg drive. But, what separates Vereen is his strength and durability.

He led all RB's at the combine with 31 bench press reps and never missed a game at Cal due to injury.

Vereen garnered All-Pac-10 honors in each of his final two seasons in Berkeley despite playing behind former Lions’ first round pick, Javid Best in 2009.

Despite forgoing his senior season to enter the draft Vereen left Cal ranked in the top 5 in rushing touchdowns (29), total touchdowns (35) and all-purpose yards (4,069). Vareen had his best season last year as he ran for 1,167 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. 

Draft guru, Mel Kiper, ranked Vereen No. 5 in the class of 2012 RBs.

This is a solid pick for the Patriots.  Definitely the best possible situation for Vereen as Bill Belichick is famous for putting his player in great positions to succeed.

Vereen will be able to step in and contribute immediately as the scat back in the Patriots' running back stable.
